Illuminating Japan’s Largest Slum
This powerful series comprises 30 selected analog photographs (35mm, 3:2 format, approximately 60×40 cm) depicting life in the Kamagasaki district of Osaka, Japan. Kamagasaki is widely considered the largest slum in Japan, an area the authorities have long tried to conceal: notably, it does not appear on any official map of Osaka, a conscious effort to mask the nation’s severe social inequality. Through Hartmann’s sensitive and penetrating lens, the exhibition brings to light the faces and stories of these “invisible” people.
